Well water testing and analysis - check your private well for contaminants

Well Water Lab Report Interpreter

Enter the numbers from your lab report. We compare them against EPA reference standards and tell you what needs attention.

This tool compares your lab results to EPA drinking water standards used as reference benchmarks for private wells. It is not a safety determination or substitute for consultation with a certified water testing professional. Results stay in your browser and are not stored or transmitted.

Sample Context

Bacteria

Total Coliform Bacteria Look for 'Total Coliform' or 'Coliform Bacteria' on your report If your report shows a number (MPN, CFU, or colonies/100mL), any value above 0 = Present
E. coli Look for 'E. coli' or 'Fecal Coliform' on your report If your report shows a number (MPN, CFU, or colonies/100mL), any value above 0 = Present

Numeric Parameters

Enter the number from your report. Use the < button if your report shows a "less than" value (e.g., <0.005). Use ND for "Not Detected." If your report shows an estimated or flagged value (marked J, F, or E), enter the number as-is.

Nitrate Also listed as: Nitrate-N, Nitrate (as N), NO3-N Your report may say 'Nitrate-N', 'NO3-N', or 'Nitrate as Nitrogen'. Check the unit carefully.
Arsenic Also listed as: Arsenic, Total, Total Arsenic, Arsenic (Total) Usually reported in ppb or ug/L. 1 ug/L = 1 ppb.
Lead Also listed as: Lead, Total, Total Lead, Lead (Total) Usually reported in ppb or ug/L. Check if your report uses mg/L (1 mg/L = 1000 ppb).
Copper Also listed as: Copper, Total, Total Copper, Copper (Total) Usually reported in mg/L or ppm
mg/L (ppm)
Fluoride Also listed as: Fluoride, Total, Total Fluoride Usually reported in mg/L or ppm
mg/L (ppm)
Iron Also listed as: Iron, Total, Total Iron, Iron (Total) Usually reported in mg/L or ppm. Some reports show 'Total Iron' and 'Dissolved Iron' separately.
mg/L (ppm)
Manganese Also listed as: Manganese, Total, Total Manganese, Manganese (Total) May be reported in mg/L (ppm) or ug/L (ppb). 1 mg/L = 1000 ug/L.
Hardness Also listed as: Total Hardness, Hardness (as CaCO3), Hardness, Total Usually reported in mg/L (as CaCO3) or grains per gallon (gpg). Select the unit your report uses.
pH Also listed as: pH Level, pH Value, Hydrogen Ion Concentration pH is a number between 0 and 14. Most well water is between 5.5 and 8.5.

Chloride Also listed as: Chloride (Cl), Chlorides Usually reported in mg/L or ppm
mg/L (ppm)
Sodium Also listed as: Sodium, Total, Total Sodium Usually reported in mg/L or ppm. Note: water softeners add sodium to water.
mg/L (ppm)
Uranium Also listed as: Uranium, Total, Total Uranium, Uranium (Total) Usually reported in ppb or ug/L. Not included in all basic well water tests.
Radon Also listed as: Radon-222, Rn-222, Radon in Water Measured in pCi/L (picocuries per liter). This is NOT the same unit as other contaminants. Requires a specialized radon-in-water test.
PFOA Also listed as: Perfluorooctanoic acid, Perfluorooctanoic Acid, PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic acid) Reported in ppt (parts per trillion) or ng/L. This is the individual PFOA result, not total PFAS. EPA MCL for PFOA is 4 ppt.
