Frequently Asked Questions

How does CheckMyTap get its water quality data?
We compile data from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS), EPA UCMR5 monitoring data, USGS geological surveys, and individual municipal Consumer Confidence Reports. We cross-reference utility-reported contaminant levels against federal legal limits and independent health guidelines. Our editorial team verifies this data and presents it in plain language with specific, actionable treatment recommendations.
Is US tap water safe to drink?
For most Americans, tap water is legally safe under the Safe Drinking Water Act. However, legal limits and health science don't always agree. Over 320 contaminants have been detected in US tap water, many without legal limits. We recommend checking your specific city's data and considering filtration for drinking water.
What are PFAS (forever chemicals)?
PFAS are a family of over 10,000 synthetic chemicals used in nonstick coatings, waterproof clothing, firefighting foam, and more. They don't break down in the environment and can accumulate in the body. The EPA set the first legal limits for PFAS in drinking water in 2024, at 4 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS.
How hard is my water?
Water hardness varies by city and source. The Southwest and Great Plains have the hardest water (often 200+ PPM), while the Pacific Northwest is typically soft (under 60 PPM). Search your city on CheckMyTap for exact hardness data and treatment recommendations.
What is the best water filter for my home?
It depends on what's in your water. For PFAS, you need an NSF P473 certified filter or reverse osmosis. For hard water, you need a water softener (filters don't soften). For lead and chlorine, most carbon filters work well. Take our 60-second quiz for a personalized recommendation based on your city's data.
Are microplastics in my tap water?
Studies show that 94% of US tap water contains microplastics. Bottled water actually contains about 3x more nanoplastic particles than treated tap water. Reverse osmosis systems and NSF 401-certified filters are the most effective at removing microplastics.
How often should I test my water?
We recommend testing your tap water at least once a year, or immediately if you notice changes in taste, smell, or appearance. Home test strips (~$15) screen for basics, while certified lab tests (~$150-300) provide comprehensive analysis including PFAS.
Does CheckMyTap sell water filters?
No. CheckMyTap is an independent data platform. We earn revenue through affiliate partnerships when you purchase products through our links, at no extra cost to you. Our water quality data is never influenced by affiliate relationships. Read our full disclosure.
