What grains per gallon means

Grains per gallon (GPG) is the standard unit for measuring water hardness in the United States. One grain per gallon equals 17.1 milligrams per liter (mg/L) of calcium carbonate equivalent. The term comes from an old unit of weight: one grain is 1/7,000 of a pound, approximately 64.8 milligrams. When applied to water, it measures the total concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium expressed as if it were all calcium carbonate.

GPG is used universally in the water softener industry for equipment sizing, salt dosing calculations, and regeneration scheduling. Understanding this unit is essential for choosing the right softener and operating it efficiently.

GPG vs. PPM vs. mg/L

Municipal water reports and lab test results typically report hardness in parts per million (PPM) or milligrams per liter (mg/L). These two units are interchangeable for practical purposes (1 PPM = 1 mg/L in water). Softener manufacturers and installers use GPG. Converting between them is straightforward:

Why GPG matters for softener sizing

Every water softener is rated by its total grain capacity, for example, 32,000 grains, 48,000 grains, or 64,000 grains. This number represents how many grains of hardness the resin bed can remove before it must regenerate (flush with salt brine to recharge the resin).

The sizing calculation uses GPG to determine how quickly your softener will exhaust its capacity:

Step-by-step sizing

  • Step 1: Find your water hardness in GPG. If your water report shows PPM, divide by 17.1. Example: 250 PPM / 17.1 = 14.6 GPG.
  • Step 2: If your water contains iron, add 3 GPG for every 1 mg/L of iron. Example: 14.6 GPG + (2 mg/L iron x 3) = 20.6 GPG compensated hardness.
  • Step 3: Estimate daily water usage. The EPA estimates 80-100 gallons per day for a household. For a family of four, use approximately 300 gallons per day.
  • Step 4: Multiply compensated hardness by daily water usage. Example: 20.6 GPG x 300 gallons = 6,180 grains per day.
  • Step 5: Multiply by the number of days between regenerations (typically 7 days). Example: 6,180 x 7 = 43,260 grains needed per cycle.

High-efficiency softeners with demand-initiated regeneration (DIR) use less salt because they only regenerate when the resin capacity is actually depleted, rather than on a fixed timer schedule. This is especially important in very hard water areas where salt consumption can add up.
